Mass Timber Comparative WBLCA Series

Embodied Carbon and Cost Implications

Mass timber buildings are a powerful strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the built environment due to the material’s low embodied carbon and biogenic carbon storage. This presentation will provide an overview of how wood can reduce embodied carbon emissions, including how to measure and compare carbon emissions using whole building life cycle assessment (WBLCA) and the importance of biogenic carbon. The presentation will also review the Mass Timber Comparative Life Cycle Assessment Series, which explores the embodied carbon, cost, and speed of construction implications of mass timber buildings versus functionally equivalent steel or concrete buildings across four studies.

Speakers

Erin Kinder, PE, SE, LEED AP  | WoodWorks

Erin is a licensed Structural and Professional Engineer in California, a Professional Engineer in Colorado, and a LEED Accredited Professional. She received a Bachelor of Science from Carnegie Mellon University and a Master of Science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Erin came to WoodWorks with over 10 years of experience in structural engineering design, construction administration and project leadership. At WoodWorks Erin focuses on Life Cycle Assessment, embodied carbon, and the long-term benefits of wood construction.

Alexis Feitel, PE | KL&A Engineers & Builders

Alexis is a licensed structural engineer and the Embodied Carbon Director at KL&A Engineers & Builders, a leader in mass timber. With a decade of experience, Alexis leads a dedicated team in developing and implementing innovative strategies to quantify and reduce embodied carbon in design and construction practices. She is nationally recognized for her embodied carbon advocacy, mass timber life cycle assessment studies, and salvaged steel reuse. She was named ACEC Colorado’s 2024 Young Professional of the Year, is a leader of SEI’s Sustainability Committee, and is an active member of the Colorado Mass Timber Coalition. 

Anli Ni   | KL&A Engineers & Builders

Anli is a structural designer at KL&A Engineers & Builders with over three years of experience in structural design and analysis. She specializes in conventional building materials and has a particular interest in light-frame wood and mass timber multi-family construction. As a key member of KL&A’s Embodied Carbon group, Team Carbon, Anli is dedicated to quantifying and reducing embodied carbon in buildings. She is committed to sustainable and innovative structural design and her passion lies in incorporating carbon reduction strategies into her daily engineering work.
